In 1732, over 20,000 Protestants were exiled
from the Archbishopric of Salzburg in a cruel and
notorious act of religious persecution.
EXULANTEN
HOME
The Salzburg Expulsion was a monumental event
which sent shock waves around the world.
The following pages tell the tale of the Exulanten,
those hearty, devout Salzburg exiles forced to leave their mountain homes
and sometimes even sacrifice their children for their faith.
Please enjoy the travel through time!
Part of the saga includes a small book written by a rebellious compatriot
which provided comfort and spiritual inspiration for the weary exiles.
It is the story of their long and harrowing journeys into the distant realms
of East Prussia, Frankonia, Holland, America and elsewhere.
Its author was a previously banished salt miner named Joseph Schaitberger,
and his story and that of his own family are included here.
