"Lieb ist Laydes Anfangkh über kurz oder lang"

She bore him 15 children, 5 of whom died in infancy. He furnished Lock Altenau grandly, with
wonderful garden plants and flowers, and for 22 years they were faithful to each other. But this
affair was an issue with his opponents and is said to have cost Wolf Dietrich the appointment of
cardinal.
Early in the 17th century, the Archbishopric came into conflict with Bavaria. In 1611, Maximilian of
Bavaria negotiated with the pope, who then ordered that Hapsburg or Wittelsbach royal lines could
be elected as Archbishop of Salzburg, in contrast to policy established in 1606. In 1611, Bavaria
doubled import duties on goods, which damaged Salzburg’s economy. Wolf Dietrich ordered 1,000
Salzburg troops to occupy the territory of the abbey of Berchtesgaden on October 11,1611. Duke
Maximilian responded by sending his army of 24,000 men into Salzburg.
Wolf Dietrich had no chance in a war with Bavaria, and Wolf Dietrich finally fled from Salzburg in
the dead of night into the Hapsburg areas. Maximilian occupied the city and had Dietrich arrested.
On November 23,1611, he was sent under strict guard to Hohenwerfen fortress. Dietrich was
imprisoned and formally deposed in 1612. Bavarian troops remained in the country until 1612.
On January 16, 1617, he died there in agony after suffering severe cramps. One of the writings he
scratched on his wall said: "Lieb ist Laydes Anfangkh über kurz oder lang." After his fall and
capture, Salome Alt had also been arrested, but released soon after. She found a new homeland in
Upper Austria where her children could flourish, and she wore black the rest of her life. She was
never allowed to see her love again after his arrest. Salome Alt died on June 27, 1663 at age 95.
"Der Erzbischof von Salzburg,
Ein gar ein stolzer Mann,
Der liebt die schönen
Jungfräulein
Und sieht sie freundlich an.
Er streichelt sie am Kinne,
Tut ihnen gar nit weh,
Es herrscht Frau Venusinne
Im Schlosse Mirabel, juchhe,
Im Schlosse Mirabel.
Wolf's digs weren't so fancy after his arrest. Hohenwerfen, built in
1077, lords over the old market town of Werfen. It is built on a high
rock formation surrounded by the Tennen and Hagen Mountains, and
is an affiliated castle to the fortress Hohensalzburg about 40 km to the
south in Salzburg. It was extended 1122 to form the main fortress
building. In 1526, it was partially destroyed by warring peasants, and
then in 1530-1585 extensions were added.
Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, 1559-1617, came from an aristocratic family from the Bodensee area.
Prepared for religious life from childhood, he received his first position in Konstanz at 11 years old,
and by 16 had become a Dominican in Basel. At age 19 he was ensconced in Salzburg. He studied in
Rome and by the young age of 28 was elected Archbishop of Salzburg in 1587.
The Archbishop was both ruler of Salzburg as well as religious
leader of an important portion of southeast Germany..and this
Archbishop was in love. Salome Alt, 1568-1663, was the
daughter of a wealthy merchant, and described as one of the
most beautiful girls in the city with chestnut hair and grey eyes.
Wolf Dietrich established Lock Altenau (Mirabell) for Salome,
left, with a door concealed in a bookcase separating their
bedrooms.
For many centuries Hohenwerfen served as a prison, and it is here that Wolf Dietrich of Raitenau
was kept. It decayed in the 19th century until 1898 when it was restored by Archduke Eugen. In
1931, it was partially destroyed in a large fire and rebuilt. It was used as training center for the
Austrian State Police until 1987. The huge building has a gatehouse, keep, great hall, several towers,
arsenal and a chapel with Romanesque columns and Baroque altars. It is now a museum and
ornithological station for birds of prey with live falconry exhibits.
Der Erzbischof von Salzburg,
Ein gar ein strenger Mann,
Der bindet die schnöden Ketzer
An glühende Öfen an
Und lässt sie weidlich
schwitzen;
Derweil erkühlt am See
Er sich von Liebeshitzen
Im Schlosse Mirabel, juchhe,
Im Schlosse Mirabel.
Der Erzbischof von Salzburg,
O wehe, was geschah,
Traktieret nicht mehr Minne,
Traktiert Dogmatica.
Man setzte ihn gefangen
Zu seinem großen Weh.
Wie gern wär er gegangen
Zum Schlosse Mirabel, juchhe,
Zum Schlosse Mirabel.
Oh Erzbischof von Salzburg,
Dir ist ganz recht geschehn!
Es soll ein großer Kleriker
Nicht zu den Mädchen gehn.
Die blühen für die Laien,
Sogar für Ketzer, - weh!
Ich selbst erfuhrs im Maien
Im Schlosse Mirabel, juchhe,
Im Schlosse Mirabel."

A strict reformer and counter reformationist, he was an zealous absolutist. He amassed great art
collections. In 1604, he hired Venetian master Vincenzo Scamozzi to develop plans for a magnificent
renewal of Salzburg in the baroque style. The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical
territory located between Austria and Bavaria.
